Dominion Energy has announced plans to construct a new 2.6-gigawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Grant County that would operate alongside the existing coal-fired Mt. Storm Power Station.
The proposed Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station would represent a multibillion-dollar investment in the region and is expected to create more than 1,400 construction jobs and 150 permanent positions once completed. The project remains subject to receiving required permits and regulatory approvals.
Company officials estimate the project would generate more than $259 million in economic activity for Grant and Tucker counties during construction and nearly $950 million in tax revenue for Grant County over the first 36 years of operation.
The new natural gas facility would be built near the existing 1.6-gigawatt Mt. Storm Power Station, which Dominion plans to continue operating as part of the region’s energy portfolio.
“For generations, Mt. Storm Power Station has been an economic engine for West Virginia and a reliable power source for our entire region,” said Ed Baine, Dominion Energy’s executive vice president of utility operations and president of Dominion Energy Virginia. “This proposed power station will further enhance Mt. Storm’s positive impact on the economy and grid reliability for decades to come. It will create thousands of new jobs, generate billions in economic investment, and strengthen our region’s energy independence.”
The proposed project comes as energy demand continues to increase nationwide, with utilities and policymakers seeking additional reliable generation capacity to support economic growth, industrial development and emerging technologies.
U.S. Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., said Dominion’s investment reinforces West Virginia’s role as an energy producer.
“I’ve been saying it since the beginning: energy is the lifeblood of West Virginia,” Justice said. “Dominion Energy’s investment in a state-of-the-art natural gas plant cements our position as America’s energy leader. Under the Trump administration’s America First energy vision, we aren’t just participating in the national energy renaissance — we’re driving it.”
Justice said the project would create jobs while adding additional reliability to the electric grid.
“This project brings thousands of high-paying jobs and bolsters our grid with reliable, affordable power,” Justice said. “We are proving once again that when America needs power, West Virginia delivers.”
The announcement is also part of a broader push by state officials to expand West Virginia’s electricity generation capacity. Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s “50 by 50” energy plan, announced in 2025, calls for increasing the state’s generating capacity from about 16 gigawatts to 50 gigawatts by 2050.
State officials said approximately 7 gigawatts of new generation projects have been announced since the plan’s launch.
The Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station will require additional regulatory review before construction can move forward.
