On November 19, 2015 the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) announced that applications are now being accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Feb. 16, 2016, for New Technology Implementation Grants. The program is part of the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan, and provides up to $3.5 million in grants for eligible individuals and businesses that build, own, and operate new technologies to reduce emissions from point sources or store electricity related to renewable energy.

There are three NTIG project categories:

• Advanced Clean Energy projects that involve the use of certain hydrocarbons (coal, natural gas, or petcoke), biomass, solid waste, or derived-hydrogen fuel cells, while meeting minimum emissions reductions requirements
• New Technology projects that reduce emissions of regulated pollutants (such as criteria pollutants or hazardous air pollutants) from point sources
• Electricity Storage projects that store electrical energy related to renewable energy sources

The kick-off meeting for the four-year, multi-client cooperative research program, which is open to potential new members, was held Nov. 5 at SwRI headquarters in San Antonio.

“We will suggest a number of research areas that we think are important for the consortium membership to investigate. The members, though, will determine the direction of the research over the four years,” said Dr. Charles Roberts, a director in SwRI’s Engine, Emissions, and Vehicle Research Division and the program lead. Over the past quarter of a century, membership in the consortium has included major diesel engine manufacturers as well as electronics, fuels and lubricants, and other affiliated systems suppliers.
